The financial technologies (FinTech) revolution is in full swing globally. In this paper, we take stock of the key aspects of the FinTech revolution, structuring our review on a flow of funds conceptual framework. Hence, we consider the opportunities and risks for households, firms, banks and the government, drawing on the quickly increasing volume of research in this area. We also consider regulatory issues and the broader question of the governance of FinTech in a global context. We summarize the key take-aways from existing research but also identify some promising research ideas, which future research could pursue, including some insights into the context of the global Covid-19 pandemic and other global risks such as climate risk.
